THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX: THE DELUXE MOVIE STORYBOOK
Candlewick Press, $19.95Although it's nowhere near as satisfying as the original book by Kate DiCamillo, this pop/flap-up book is not without certain charms, chiefly the small flicker book that "animates" Despereaux as he bravely snatches a piece of cheese from the jaws of a mouse-trap. The story of the little mouse (with extraordinarily large ears) who falls in love with a princess is largely reduced to a series of illustrations from the movie with a few bells and whistles to entertain small hands. A good place to start for very early readers looking for a simple version of what is very entertaining, beautifully crafted story-telling.
